How to run a book club discussion
Ask fewer questions, make room for quieter readers, and finish while the conversation still has energy.
Ask questions with room in them
Skip questions that test memory. Ask how a choice, scene, or point of view changed the reading.
- What expectation did the opening create, and where did the book resist it?
- Which decision felt emotionally believable even if you disagreed with it?
- What did the author leave unsaid, and how did that shape your reading?
Start with the book
State the spoiler rule, then ask everyone for a first response or a marked passage. Leave scheduling and the next selection until the end.
A one-hour discussion
| Time | What to do |
|---|---|
| 10 min | Hear a first response from each person. |
| 35 min | Open one question and follow the conversation. |
| 10 min | Ask what changed during the discussion. |
| 5 min | Confirm the next book and date. |
Make room without putting people on the spot
Let silence sit for a moment. Invite someone who has not spoken, and let them pass. Readers who did not finish can talk about the part they read or listen through the spoilers.
Let disagreement stay useful
Ask which passage supports each reading. Critique the idea, not the reader. Close with “What will stay with you?” and end on time.
