Book club discussion questions that open a conversation

Book club discussion questions that get past “did you like it?”, for fiction, nonfiction, and memoir.

3-minute read

Questions that work for almost any book

  • What did the first chapter promise, and did the book keep that promise?
  • Which scene would you argue about with someone who read it differently?
  • Who gets to tell this story, and who does not?
  • Where did you stop trusting the narrator, if you ever did?
  • What did the ending close, and what did it leave open?
  • If you could cut fifty pages, which fifty?

For fiction

  • Which character behaved in a way you understood but would not defend?
  • What does the setting make possible that another place would not?
  • Where did the book choose restraint, and did it pay off?

For nonfiction and memoir

  • What is the strongest counterargument the author does not answer?
  • Which evidence convinced you, and which felt like a well-told anecdote?
  • What would you need to see to change your mind?

Two ways to close

“What will stay with you?” gives everyone a short turn. “Who should read this, and who shouldn't?” gets an honest verdict without a rating out of five.

Questions to skip

Anything with one right answer, anything that tests whether someone finished, and anything phrased so the expected opinion is obvious. “Wasn't the ending frustrating?” ends a conversation. “What did the ending refuse to give you?” starts one.
