How to choose a book club book fairly
Make a shortlist your group can get, finish, and discuss—then choose without dragging the vote out.
Set the limits
Decide how much the book can cost, which formats must be available, and how much reading time the group has. These limits keep the vote honest. They should not make every choice safe or familiar.
Ask for a reason
Each recommendation should include the title, author, length, available formats, and one sentence on why it suits the club now.
Use this short form
Book: [title and author]
Why now: [one sentence]
Access: [library, print, ebook, audio]
Length: [pages or listening time]
Pick one method
- Rotate: each member picks in turn.
- Rank: everyone ranks a short list; the broad favorite wins.
- Choose a theme: agree on a subject or genre, then vote on books within it.
- Draw: approve every finalist, then choose one at random.
Decide ties in advance
Use a quick runoff, choose the easier book to get, or save one finalist for next time. Keep every unchosen recommendation. A good book may simply need a different month.
