Book club rules worth agreeing on
Six things to decide out loud—spoilers, attendance, hosting, book choice, cost, and guests.
Spoilers
Say whether the whole book is fair game. Most clubs discuss everything and expect people who are behind to accept that. Say it once so nobody has to guess mid-sentence.
Attendance
People will miss months. Agree whether someone who did not finish should still come—the answer is usually yes—and what happens if a member disappears for a season.
Hosting and cost
Rotate hosting or pick one place. Decide whether the host provides food, whether people split anything, and whether the book budget has a ceiling. Money is easier to discuss before it is awkward.
Choosing books
Name the method and keep it. Rotating picks, ranked votes, and themed rounds all work; changing the method every time is what causes arguments.
Guests and new members
Decide whether members can bring someone, and whether the club is open, closed, or open only between books. A club that never says no becomes a party; a club that never says yes gets smaller every year.
